Moonshot AI seeks Nvidia Blackwell access via Europe amid U.S. chip curbs
· Technology · CNBC, Bloomberg
Chinese AI lab Moonshot has sought to rent Nvidia's Blackwell chips from data centers in Europe to bypass U.S. export controls that ban direct shipment to China. The lab has discussed deals with neocloud operators hosting GPUs at European facilities this year, four sources said. U.S. rules restrict advanced Nvidia chip exports to China, but remote access via overseas data centers creates a loophole. In July, the White House accused Moonshot of accessing Blackwell chips through a facility in Thailand. Chinese developers' growing chip access could intensify competition with U.S. AI labs. Moonshot makes the Kimi family of models and has not commented on the reports.
Why it matters
Chinese AI firms gaining indirect access to Nvidia's most advanced chips through European data centers could widen the technology gap with U.S. rivals and intensify global AI competition. Indian AI startups and developers may face stiffer competition as Chinese models gain greater processing capability.
