· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
In Karnataka, 84,900 Form-7 applications were submitted to delete names from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision exercise. In Ujire, Belthangady constituency, 82 Form-7s targeted Muslim voters, including Ahmed Shah and his family, who discovered the filings after being asked for additional documents by the booth-level officer. Rakshith Shivaram reported 279 Form-7s filed across 16 polling stations in Belthangady for voter deletion. The forms were submitted by three individuals: H K Sudhakar, Geetha, and Balakrishna Shetty. Affected voters, including Mohammed Luqman, have decided to approach the police to file complaints. The chief electoral officer's office stated that electoral registration officers should not accept such forms without evidence.
Why it matters
Muslim voters in Karnataka's Belthangady constituency face potential disenfranchisement as their names are targeted for deletion from electoral rolls via Form-7 applications. This raises concerns about the integrity of the voter list and access to voting rights for affected communities.
