Mourinho Says Comparing Real Madrid to Barcelona Before El Clasico Is Unfair
· Sports · Sportstar, Sports Illustrated, BBC Sport
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said comparing his side to Barcelona ahead of Sunday's La Liga 2026-27 El Clasico at Camp Nou is unfair because he has been in charge for only three months versus Hansi Flick's longer tenure at Barca. Barcelona, the defending two-time champion, leads the table by six points and was unbeaten until a midweek loss to Paris Saint-Germain, while Madrid sits third after winning its last four matches. Mourinho noted that external perceptions of a Barca thrashing will not shift despite the recent results. He stressed that the team is still in an early phase of development and that Clasico form counts for nothing once the match starts. Mourinho also confirmed he will not alter his plans specifically to contain Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, who is in strong form ahead of the Ballon d'Or announcement.
Why it matters
The match will test Mourinho's early rebuilding job against a dominant Barcelona side, with a win potentially cutting the gap to three points and shifting title momentum.
