Mumbai Airport Upgrade Plan Stalls Amid Migration Uncertainty
· Business · India Today, The Hindu
The Union government has intervened in the proposed migration of international flights from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to the new Navi Mumbai International Airport, calling for the transition to be deferred by a few weeks. During a meeting chaired by civil aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha on October 6, officials urged airlines and airport operators to establish a concrete operational plan before proceeding. The proposed shift would move a third of international departures to Navi Mumbai, affecting 46 airlines and 265 of the 770 weekly departures currently operating out of Mumbai. Representatives from Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, the Airports Authority of India, and domestic carriers including IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air attended the 90-minute consultation. A second consultation is scheduled for October 13, casting doubt on the originally planned rollout date of October 25-26.
Why it matters
