Mumbai Petrol Pumps Threaten To Stop UPI Payments

· Business · Indian Express, LiveMint

Petrol pump dealers in Mumbai have threatened to discontinue UPI payment services starting October 15. The Petrol Dealers Association of Mumbai is protesting the Centre's decision to impose a 0.4 percent merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. Dealers argue that their commissions have remained stagnant for nearly a decade, making it impossible to absorb these new transaction costs. The association has formally written to the RBI and the Finance Ministry requesting a complete waiver of the charges.

Why it matters

If the threat is carried out, thousands of motorists in Mumbai could face significant inconvenience as fuel retailers move to restrict digital payment options.
