Mumbai Pilot Saves 180 Lives After Co-Pilot Attack on Flight

Captain Smit Machchhar, a Mumbai-based pilot, fought off his Omani national co-pilot who attacked him mid-flight on flydubai flight FZ 1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite being severely injured, he regained control of the Boeing 737 MAX after it plunged over 14,000 feet in 29 seconds, preventing a fatal crash. He unlocked the cockpit door, allowing Emirati crew and Israeli passengers to subdue the assailant. Two additional pilots aboard as passengers then took over and safely diverted the aircraft to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where the rudder was found detached. Captain Machchhar is reported to be stable and recovering, having previously worked with SpiceJet until 2023.
