Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar have been placed under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall for 24 hours, starting Sunday, as a monsoon revival intensifies ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Key areas like Bandra Kurla Complex, Chembur, and Magathane recorded over 100 mm of rainfall within nine hours, with BKC alone logging 147 mm between 1 am and 10 am. The IMD attributed the surge to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is increasing moisture in Maharashtra’s Konkan region. While no alerts are issued for September 14–17, moderate rainfall is expected to persist. The BMC’s data shows eastern suburbs received the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours, with 72.71 mm in the east, 65.96 mm in the west, and 52.07 mm in the island city.
