Mundhe Questions Up to 2,800% Mark-ups on Hospital Consumables

Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has flagged price mark-ups of up to 2,800% on hospital consumables after a survey conducted across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The survey revealed that items such as IV sets and nebulisers procured for around Rs 11 carried maximum retail prices of up to Rs 325. Mundhe questioned why procurement cost gaps were not passed on to consumers, calling the practice unfair and lacking transparency. The FDA has submitted a detailed proposal on these pricing discrepancies to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority. The review follows consumer complaints regarding hospital billing practices.
