N Chandrasekaran Gets Reappointed Tata Sons Chair Reappointment After Earlier Step-Down Decision
· Business · Hindustan Times, India Today
N Chandrasekaran decided in August 2026 to step down as Tata Sons chairman when his current term ends in February 2027, citing lack of unanimous board support for his reappointment. However, on September 18, 2026, the Tata Sons board approved a fresh five-year term for him after receiving a unanimous resolution from Tata Trusts dated July 28, 2025. The Tata Trusts resolution expressed appreciation for his stewardship since 2017 and recommended his re-appointment as executive chairman upon expiry of his current term. Earlier in February 2026, the board had not carried through a reappointment proposal after Noel Tata sought a clear roadmap for new businesses under Chandrasekaran’s watch, including e-commerce, aviation and semiconductors. Chandrasekaran was first appointed chairman in 2017 and began a second five-year term in 2022.
Why it matters
The reappointment secures leadership continuity at Tata Sons, overseeing the salt-to-software conglomerate’s strategic direction. It resolves internal board discord that had arisen over performance metrics for newer ventures like e-commerce and aviation.
