NAM College Closed in Kannur Following Student Protests and Principal Assault

· India · The Hindu, NDTV, The Guardian

NAM College at Kallikkandy in Kannur remained closed on Wednesday following protests by Muslim Students’ Federation activists demanding the withdrawal of the suspension of the college union chairman. The unrest escalated when union office-bearers collected money from students for Onam cultural programmes without authorization, leading to student objections and management disciplinary action. On Tuesday, MSF activists led by union chairman Mohammed Panol and secretary Sinan confronted Principal A.P. Shameer in his chamber to demand the revocation of the suspensions. The protest turned violent when the Principal was allegedly gheraoed and manhandled by the students. Principal Shameer subsequently sought medical treatment at a hospital, while college authorities announced a holiday to manage the tense situation.

Why it matters

The violent confrontation and subsequent closure disrupt academic schedules and campus safety for students and staff at NAM College.
