Naman Dhir Named India Impact Player vs New Zealand T20I
· Sports · Indian Express, Times of India
Naman Dhir, a Faridkot-born batsman, chose cricket over academic honours and requested one more year from his father before considering moving to Canada. After Punjab overlooked him, his father Naresh Kumar Dhir supported the additional season. Dhir was later named India's impact player in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, collecting the medal in the dressing room. His journey began when coach Arunvir Devgan spotted him playing in Faridkot Mohalla Pukran at age eight, leading to training under Gagan Sidhu and rapid progression through Punjab age-group teams.
Why it matters
Dhir's selection rewards a local Faridkot talent and validates the cricket development pathway from minor districts to the national squad, inspiring aspiring cricketers from small towns. It also highlights the effectiveness of the BCCI's impact-player rule in giving domestic players match exposure at the international level.
