NASA Space Observatory Re-Enters Earth Atmosphere With Debris Risk Over India

· Technology · Times of India, ABC News (AU)

NASA's 1.5-tonne Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is scheduled to re-enter Earth's atmosphere after 22 years of operations. The US Space Force projected the re-entry to occur at approximately 3:30 a.m. EST on November 4, with an 11-hour window of uncertainty. While most of the spacecraft is expected to burn up during descent, surviving debris could fall within a band spanning between 20.6°N and 20.6°S latitude. This potential re-entry zone includes parts of southern India alongside regions in Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America. ISRO has not yet issued any official statement regarding whether it is tracking the descending telescope.

Why it matters

The unguided re-entry of a space observatory over populated southern latitude zones poses a rare, albeit low-probability, debris hazard.
