NASA Spacecraft Discovers Massive New Impact Crater on the Moon

Scientists analyzing data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter have discovered a massive impact crater on the moon's near side. The crater spans 728 feet across and reaches a depth of 141 feet, making it the solar system's largest known impact crater formed in recent times. The powerful impact occurred two years ago but went undetected by Earth telescopes until LRO wide-angle images were identified in August 2025. Researchers estimate that such large-scale impacts happen only once every 132 years, offering rare insights as NASA plans lunar bases for astronauts. Scientists also identified a 4-mile-wide cold spot surrounding the crater, indicating significant churning of the lunar soil.
