Director Rajiv Rai revealed that actor Naseeruddin Shah felt awkward romancing Sonam in their 1989 film, Tridev, particularly during the sensual song "Tirchi Topiwale." Shah expressed to Rai that Sonam was younger than his daughter, Heeba Shah, which made him uncomfortable. Rai reassured Shah, telling him to approach the dance sequences as acting rather than traditional steps. Despite the initial hesitation, Shah became comfortable after their conversation, accepting that it was cinema and not a realistic documentary.
