Nasscom Pushes Back on US Green Card Freeze
· Business · Hindustan Times, Moneycontrol, India Today
India's tech industry body Nasscom has reacted to President Donald Trump's latest immigration crackdown after the US administration suspended several firms from applying for green cards. The suspension covers the Permanent Labour Certification program, known as PERM, which serves as the first step for foreign workers to obtain permanent residency in the US. Nasscom stated that immigration and skilled talent mobility are distinct issues and should not be viewed through the same lens. The industry body added that Indian tech firms have reduced their dependence on H-1B visas while expanding local hiring and building a strong domestic workforce in the US. Microsoft also defended its filings, stating that the vast majority of its US employees are American citizens.
Why it matters
The suspension of the PERM program creates uncertainty for foreign tech workers seeking permanent residency in the US, forcing Indian IT companies to further evaluate their talent mobility strategies.
