Navy rescues 20 crew members of fishing vessel from pirates over 3,000 km from Mumbai

· India · Times of India, India Today

The Indian Navy has rescued all 20 crew members of the fishing vessel Azini from armed pirates during a 48-hour operation in the Arabian Sea. The vessel was intercepted more than 3,000 km from Mumbai with support from the Indian Air Force. Defence minister Rajnath Singh praised the coordinated mission, noting that a destroyer and naval commandos secured the crew and a huge cache of weapons. The operation took place further from the coast than the Navy's March 2024 interception of the pirate ship MV Ruen. The Indian Navy maintains over 10 warships deployed for anti-piracy patrols across the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and East Coast of Africa.

Why it matters

The operation underscores the Indian Navy's operational readiness and resolve to secure maritime trade routes and safeguard lives across the Indian Ocean Region.
