Navy Sailor Kills Wife and Children Before Suicide in Mumbai
· India · Indian Express, NDTV
A Navy sailor was found dead on 15 August in his Navy Nagar residence in Mumbai, and police say he likely killed his wife and two children before taking his own life. The bodies of the wife, Oma, and their three‑year‑old son Yash and two‑month‑old child were more decomposed than the sailor’s, leading investigators to suspect they died first. The sailor, Puranmal Shambhulal Mehra, had taken a 15‑day parental leave in June and never returned to duty. Police are probing a monetary and property dispute with his four siblings as a possible factor in his year‑long depression, for which he was on medication. The incident was recorded as an accidental death and a post‑mortem was conducted at JJ Hospital on 16 August.
Why it matters
The deaths underline mental‑health challenges within the Indian armed forces and the impact of family disputes on service members. The case may prompt the Navy to review support mechanisms for personnel facing similar pressures.
