NCERT Class IX Textbook Links Governance Mottos to Ancient Texts
· India · Times of India, Indian Express
The NCERT has introduced a new Class IX social science textbook titled "Understanding Society: India and Beyond", Part 2. The volume traces India's national motto, "Satyameva Jayate", to the Mundaka Upanishad and the Supreme Court motto, "Yato Dharmastato Jayah", to the Mahabharata. Released on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the six-chapter volume also references the Sengol and Mahatma Gandhi's conception of Ram Rajya. The textbook presents these elements as expressions of institutional values and responsibilities for democratic governance.
Why it matters
The curriculum shift integrates traditional Indian texts and cultural symbols directly into foundational civics education for secondary students.
