NCERT Revises Class 9 Medieval History Book to Focus on Resistance

The NCERT released its new social science textbook for Class 9 in New Delhi on Tuesday, framing 700 years of medieval Indian history from 1000 to 1700 AD as a period of resistance and resilience. Titled Understanding Society: India And Beyond — Part 2, the textbook replaces four older books and focuses on how Indian society defended itself against external threats and preserved its traditions. The history section documents successive invasions and describes how rulers such as the Rajputs, Marathas, Sikhs, Jats, the kingdom of the Ahom, and the Vijayanagara empire resisted Turkish, Mughal, and European forces. A column in the textbook notes that historical rulers frequently invoked goddesses such as Kali, Durga, and Bhavani as protectors during times of conflict.
