NDA Wins 34 of 42 Seats in First Silchar Municipal Corporation Election

· India · The Hindu, Times of India

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance secured a landslide victory in the inaugural Silchar Municipal Corporation election in southern Assam, winning 34 of the 42 wards. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the outcome reflects public support for development, peace, connectivity, empowerment, and better governance. Official election results show the BJP won 32 seats, including two uncontested wards, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad secured two seats. The Congress party managed to win two seats, and independent candidates bagged the remaining eight wards. The civic body polls in Silchar were held a decade after the town last voted as a Municipal Board before being elevated to a corporation in September 2025.

Why it matters

The decisive win strengthens the ruling alliance's political footprint in southern Assam's primary economic hub and shapes local governance in the newly formed corporation.
