Nepal Demands Climate Compensation From India, China, US
· World · India Today, NDTV, Zee News
Nepal has formally approached the UN-backed Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage to seek financial compensation for recent floods in the Bhotekoshi river basin. The government has identified India, China, and the US as major greenhouse gas emitters responsible for the climate consequences affecting the nation. At least 1,127 people have died and 3,900 remain missing following a massive rock-and-ice avalanche near the Nepal-China border. Prime Minister Balendra 'Balen' Shah is considering attending the 81st UN General Assembly in New York to personally press for climate justice and reconstruction aid. The country estimates it requires $4-5 billion to rebuild damaged infrastructure in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts.
Why it matters
Nepal's demand for billions in climate reparations from major global powers sets a new diplomatic precedent for vulnerable nations seeking financial accountability for climate-induced disasters.
