Nepal Flash Flood Death Toll Could Reach 10,000, Minister Warns

Nepal Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle stated that the final death toll from the August flash floods could reach 10,000, matching the scale of the 2015 earthquake. Official figures currently report 1,411 deaths and 5,875 people missing, though these numbers are expected to rise. The floods have severely impacted Nepal's energy sector, destroying approximately 800 MW of power generation capacity in the Trishuli basin. During his visit to New Delhi, Wagle discussed long-pending connectivity projects and clean energy goals with Indian officials. He emphasized that despite the disaster, Nepal remains committed to its target of generating 35,000 MW of clean energy by 2035.
