Catastrophic flash floods triggered by a glacier breaking away from a mountaintop have struck villages along the Nepal-China border, killing over 700 people in Nepal while China has officially reported just five deaths. The disaster hit the Himalayan border region, with the Gyirong crossing area home to several thousand people on the Tibetan side. Chinese President Xi Jinping chaired a rescue meeting on Friday and dispatched Premier Li Qiang to the affected region, with hundreds of PLA personnel and emergency teams deployed.
