Nepal Rejects Foreign Rescue Teams for Flood Response
· World · Times of India, Hindustan Times
Nepal has declined offers from several nations, including India and China, to deploy specialised search-and-rescue teams for ongoing flood relief operations. The government stated that its own security agencies are fully capable of managing the disaster response. This decision follows lessons learned during the 2015 earthquake, where the arrival of multiple international teams led to coordination and management difficulties. While rejecting external rescue personnel, Kathmandu continues to accept financial aid, requesting that all contributions be routed through the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. Currently, 517 foreign nationals, including over 200 Indians, remain missing or trapped by the floods.
Why it matters
The decision centralises disaster management under Nepali authorities to avoid the logistical bottlenecks experienced in 2015, directly impacting the speed and coordination of aid reaching trapped foreign nationals.
