The government of Nepal has approached the United Nations Loss and Damage Fund for $20 million in climate compensation following devastating flash floods and mudslides triggered by a glacial collapse. Nepal submitted the funding request on September 1, arguing that the Himalayan nation faces natural disasters it did not create and cannot manage alone. The Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage responded on September 3 by stating it would approach the request with urgency while respecting established decision-making processes. Established at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh in 2022, the fund has not disbursed any money to any country as of August 2026. The request from Nepal highlights severe structural limitations and delays in the international climate compensation mechanism.
