Netherlands Relocates Billions in Gold From North America to London
· World · BBC News, LiveMint
The Dutch central bank confirmed on Wednesday that it has relocated 86 tonnes of gold worth billions of dollars from North America to London amid increasing geopolitical unrest. The complex operation, conducted between March and August, involved moving gold reserves from New York and Ottawa to the Bank of England, where the precious metal can be traded more easily during a crisis. Prior to the transfer, the central bank held 31.3% of its gold in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa, figures that have now both dropped to 18.5%. Meanwhile, the bank's share of gold stored in London increased from 18.1% to 32.1%, while its reserves held inside the Netherlands remain at 30.8%. The total Dutch gold stock reached 612.4 tonnes valued at €72.2 billion by the end of 2025. The relocation coincided with an ongoing trade dispute between the US and Canada involving fresh tariff announcements.
Why it matters
The relocation reflects growing European anxiety over transatlantic trade disputes and geopolitical stability, altering how central banks manage sovereign reserves.
