Never accepted Nalsar invitation, so no question of going: CJI

Chief Justice Surya Kant confirmed in New Delhi that he never accepted an invitation from Nalsar University of Law to be chief guest at its upcoming convocation, saying the question of his attendance does not arise. Nalsar’s invitation, issued earlier, faced opposition from more than 400 of its 1,400 students who cited the CJI’s remarks in a July 20 hearing about the student march to Parliament and alleged police excesses. The CJI‑led bench has been handling petitions demanding an independent inquiry into police conduct, use of pellet guns and facial‑recognition profiling, as well as calls for action against criminal elements that allegedly infiltrated the protest. Students felt the bench declined to take suo‑motu cognisance of police excesses when an advocate sought a hearing without filing a proper petition, and the CJI had asked him to file correctly.
