New Tool Lets Mac Users Remove Apple Intelligence To Free Storage
· Technology · MacRumors, Ars Technica
A new open-source project called RemoveMacAI enables users running macOS 27 to disable Apple Intelligence, delete its downloaded files, and block automatic redownloads. The developer bypassed Apple's restrictions by using a configuration profile to switch off the asset management service without disabling System Integrity Protection. The utility typically reclaims between 10GB and 12GB of drive space, though some users have recovered significantly more. Removing the models disables all Siri-related AI features, writing assistants, image generation tools, and predictive completion, while standard dictation continues to function. The project has gained traction on GitHub, Reddit, and Hacker News, though the developer noted that the configuration keys relied upon were deprecated by Apple in macOS 26.4.
Why it matters
The tool provides a workaround for Mac owners with limited storage, particularly users with non-upgradeable 256GB machines who want to recover drive space by sacrificing local AI features.
