New Yalu River Bridge Linking China and North Korea Set to Open
· World · The Independent, Al Jazeera
A mammoth 3-kilometer bridge connecting Dandong in China to Sinuiju in North Korea is scheduled to open on Thursday, more than a decade after construction on the Chinese side was completed. The New Yalu River Bridge faced prolonged delays since 2014 due to diplomatic friction and infrastructure gaps on the North Korean side. The crossing represents a step toward closer economic and diplomatic ties between Beijing and Pyongyang. The infrastructure addition supplements the aging 1937 railway and road bridge currently serving as the sole link between the two nations.
Why it matters
The long-delayed border crossing strengthens trade and diplomatic connectivity between China and North Korea, easing decades-old transit bottlenecks.
