New Zealand trade pact to take effect on Oct 20, to give duty-free access

The India-New Zealand free trade agreement will officially come into force on October 20, coinciding with the festival of Dussehra. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the deal grants duty-free access to 100% of India’s exports to the country. The agreement aims to boost bilateral trade to Rs 35,000 crore and facilitate $20 billion in investments across sectors like manufacturing, infrastructure, and startups over the next 15 years. Additionally, India is fast-tracking negotiations with Canada for a comprehensive economic partnership agreement, with a fifth round of talks scheduled for October 5.
Why it matters
The trade pact removes existing tariffs of up to 10% on Indian goods like textiles and automobiles, while establishing an agricultural technology partnership between the two nations.
