Newborn twins fight for survival as conflict fuels Yemen's hunger crisis

· World · BBC News

Newborn twins Raghad and Raad Hassan are fighting severe acute malnutrition at al-Sadaqah hospital in Aden after fleeing fighting in the Kahboub mountains in south-west Yemen. Their family of seven spent three days walking through bombs, missiles, and drone attacks after Houthi rebel fighters reached their village. The family was forced to flee amid surging violence in the long-running civil war between Houthi rebels and government forces. Bajash Ali Sagir Hassan, the twins' father, stated that the war drove up the price of baby milk, forcing him to feed the infants water at times. The United Nations reports that an informal ceasefire collapsed in the summer, displacing more than 250,000 people and leaving approximately 800,000 without lifesaving aid.

Why it matters

Civilians across Yemen face acute hunger and displacement as the collapse of the ceasefire intensifies fighting between Houthi forces and the internationally recognised government.
