NHRC Demands Punjab Report Over Missing Independence Day Celebrations Near Pakistan Border
· India · Times of India, The Hindu, Indian Express
NHRC has asked Punjab to submit a detailed report after a complaint that Independence Day celebrations were not held in some rural and border schools. The bench led by member Priyank Kanoongo cited claims that students near the Pakistan border were denied flag hoisting, singing the national anthem and participation in observed activities. The commission wants state‑wise, district‑wise and school‑wise data on whether the prescribed observances were carried out, and requests Punjab to explain any non‑compliance. Verification is already being ordered for schools in remote areas to assess potential disparities. Punjab’s chief secretary must submit an action‑taken report within four weeks, and the NHRC has requested information from the Union Ministry of Education and Home Affairs.
Why it matters
Students in border regions may be deprived of civic education on national symbols and democratic values, raising concerns about unequal educational opportunities across the state.
