NHRC Issues Notice Over Allegations Against Punjab Chief Minister's Wife

The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognisance of allegations that the wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann sought ₹5 crore to suppress a rape case. An NHRC Bench headed by Priyank Kanoongo directed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Punjab, to inquire into the matter and submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks. The complaint stems from allegations publicly made by former Punjab judge Justice Ranjit Singh. The Commission has also forwarded the matter to the Women Safety Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Further action by the Commission will depend on the findings of the Action Taken Report.
Why it matters
The intervention by the national rights body places immediate administrative pressure on Punjab state officials to investigate serious allegations of judicial obstruction and extortion.
