NHRC Seeks Answers From Meta Over Alleged Instagram Ads Linked To Child Abuse Material
· India · NDTV, LiveMint, Economic Times
The NHRC, headed by member Priyank Kanoongo, has taken suo motu cognizance of allegations that paid advertisements on Instagram were facilitating access to child sexual abuse material. The rights panel has issued notices to Meta, the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking detailed reports on the matter. The commission has set a four-week deadline for the responses. The action follows reports that Instagram's advertising system may have been exploited to surface and promote harmful material involving minors.
Why it matters
The notice puts Meta's content-moderation practices and ad-policing systems in India under direct regulatory scrutiny, and any adverse findings could trigger tighter compliance demands from the government for all social media platforms operating in the country.
