NIA Files Case Against Omani Co-pilot for Attack on Indian Flydubai Pilot

· World · Times of India, India Today, Outlook India

The National Investigation Agency has registered a case to investigate the September 30 attack on Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit of a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Machchhar was stabbed multiple times by his Omani co-pilot in an alleged attempt to hijack the aircraft or cause it to crash. The case was filed on October 9 under the Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing others to overpower the attacker and divert the aircraft to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. He received emergency treatment there before being shifted to Abu Dhabi for further care. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his courage and presence of mind after speaking with him.

Why it matters

The attack raised serious concerns about aviation security and the safety of Indian nationals working abroad, particularly in the Gulf region. It also highlighted the risks faced by commercial flight crews and prompted international recognition of the pilot's bravery.
