· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times, India Today

The National Investigation Agency has not dropped its terror investigation against US national Matthew Aaron VanDyke and six Ukrainian nationals, according to news agency ANI. While the NIA recently filed a chargesheet against VanDyke under the Immigration and Foreigners Act rather than invoking the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, the broader probe remains active. The agency's Special Public Prosecutor stated that the investigation is ongoing and supplementary chargesheet provisions under the UAPA could be applied if offenses are established. VanDyke, a security firm founder, was arrested at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on March 13. The accused face allegations of supporting ethnic armed groups in Myanmar by supplying weapons and training.

Why it matters

The case highlights cross-border security concerns regarding foreign nationals allegedly funneling military hardware and training to armed insurgent groups operating in neighboring Myanmar.
