NIA Special Court convicts 10 accused in 2013 Jheeram Valley massacre

A Special NIA Court in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, has convicted ten individuals for their involvement in the 2013 Jheeram Valley massacre. The attack occurred on May 25, 2013, when Maoist cadres targeted a convoy of Congress leaders returning from a political rally in Sukma district. The assault involved landmine blasts followed by indiscriminate gunfire and grenade attacks, resulting in the deaths of 27 people, including prominent state Congress leaders. The convicted individuals are identified as lower-ranked commanders or armed guerrillas. The court is scheduled to announce the quantum of punishment for the convicts on September 16.
Why it matters
The conviction marks a significant legal development in one of India's deadliest Naxal attacks, which decimated the top leadership of the Congress party in Chhattisgarh. The defence lawyer has stated that the accused intend to challenge the verdict in the High Court.
