Nifty MidCap 150 posts worst weekly fall in two years, Sensex erodes ₹6.54 lakh crore

· Business · Economic Times

The Nifty MidCap 150 fell 5.26% this week, its steepest weekly decline since October 2024, while the Nifty Smallcap 250 dropped 7.10%, recording its worst weekly fall since February 2025. Friday saw the Nifty MidCap 150 decline 2.1% and the Small-cap 250 fall 2.8% as domestic retail investors' mutual fund contributions struggled to counter rising oil prices and fiscal deficit concerns. The sell-off erased ₹6.54 lakh crore from total BSE-listed market capitalisation, bringing it to ₹453.45 lakh crore, with weekly losses totalling ₹20.78 lakh crore. BSE Sensex closed 125.56 points lower at 73,123.83, while NSE Nifty 50 slipped 87.65 points to 22,600 after eroding early gains exceeding 1% earlier in the day.

Why it matters

Retail investors whose steady mutual fund contributions have undergirded the riskier end of the equity spectrum now face erosion of confidence as risk-off sentiment spreads from blue-chips to broader markets, potentially denting the theoretically riskier mid and small-cap segment.
