At least nine people died across Keralam's Malappuram, Kottayam, and Idukki districts in separate rain-related incidents within a 24-hour span beginning Sunday. In Malappuram, six tourists drowned when the Kottapuzha river flooded at Pookkottumpadam — five bodies have been recovered and one woman is still missing. A separate landslide at Velathussery near Teekoy killed a 35-year-old woman from Chennai and seriously injured her companion, while a mudslide in Idukki's Kottakkamboor flattened a rain shelter, killing two others. Chief Minister VD Satheesan visited Nilambur to oversee rescue efforts and announced that ex-gratia compensation and injury assistance would be cleared at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
