NITI Aayog Highlights Job Linkage Gaps in Conventional Degrees

A report released by NITI Aayog has highlighted a significant structural imbalance in India's higher education system, noting that millions of students pursue conventional degrees with weak employment links. Titled 'Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat', the report reveals that out of 3.4 crore undergraduate students, over 2 crore are enrolled in generic programmes like B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com, often driven by the pursuit of government jobs. Citing the Economic Survey 2024–25, the think tank noted that only 8.25 per cent of graduates are employed in roles aligned with their qualifications, while educated unemployment stands at 13 per cent overall and 20.4 per cent for graduate women. To bridge the gap, NITI Aayog called for greater industry participation and expanded Public-Private Partnership models to align curricula with market demands.
