NITI Aayog Proposes Vocational Reforms for 8.7 Crore NEET Youth

An estimated 8.7 crore Indians aged 15 to 29 were not in education, employment, or training (NEET) as of 2021, according to a NITI Aayog report titled 'Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat@2047'. The report identifies a significant disconnect between formal education and employment, noting that only 8.25 per cent of graduates hold jobs aligned with their qualifications. To address this, NITI Aayog recommends integrating vocational training into the school system starting from Class 6, with specialized 'Kaushal Tracks' from Class 9. The proposal also calls for a shift toward industry-aligned higher education and increased apprenticeship opportunities to improve employability.
