Nitin Gadkari Dismisses E20 Fuel Backlash As Paid Campaign
· Automobile · Times of India, The Hindu, Indian Express
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday described the public criticism of petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol as a paid campaign. Speaking at an event organized by the CII in New Delhi, Gadkari said opposition to E20 had subsided after peaking three months ago. His comments followed the government's notification on Monday amending the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to permit flex-fuel vehicles running on up to 100 percent ethanol. Gadkari has repeatedly advocated for alternative fuels to reduce India's dependence on imported fossil fuels and conserve foreign exchange. The rollout of E20 fuel previously faced protests from motorists concerned about fuel efficiency and engine compatibility with older vehicles.
Why it matters
The push toward E100 flex-fuel vehicles and E20 petrol impacts Indian vehicle owners, automakers, and the nation's crude oil import bill.
