NMC Proposes Rank System to Replace Percentile for PG Admissions

· India · Indian Express, Times of India

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed replacing the percentile-based system with a rank-based system for admissions to postgraduate and super-specialty courses, according to a 12-member expert committee report submitted to the Supreme Court. The change, which would eliminate percentile marks from NEET PG & SS results, is intended to reduce delays in counselling rounds and remove the need for permission from a competent authority. Doctors have criticised the proposal, arguing that even candidates scoring negative marks become eligible under rank-based allocation and that the move does not address merit concerns. The NMC has accorded in‑principle approval for the new regulations, which are still pending finalisation.

Why it matters

Medical students and junior doctors face uncertainty over admission criteria, while patients may encounter shifts in the quality of future specialists if selection standards are diluted. The proposal directly affects aspirants seeking PG and SS seats across India.
