NMC Proposes Unique ID For Doctors To Enable Nationwide Practice

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced draft regulations to issue a Unique Identification (UID) number to doctors, allowing them to practice across India without separate state registrations. Under the proposed system, once a doctor is registered with a State Medical Council and receives a UID, their credentials will be automatically updated in the National Medical Register. This move aims to eliminate the need for fresh licensing when a medical practitioner moves between different states or Union Territories. The NMC has invited public objections and suggestions on the draft for a 30-day period starting from August 11, 2026.
