NMC Says Withdrawing MSMER-2023 Will Not Lower Medical Education Standards

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The National Medical Commission has stated that the withdrawal of the Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations, 2023 will not dilute medical education standards or regulatory oversight. The Commission explained in New Delhi that the decision aims to remove overlapping procedures between boards and align responsibilities with the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. Annual disclosure reports remain mandatory for medical colleges under the existing statutory framework, alongside regular inspections and minimum standards. The previous framework had introduced parallel mechanisms and penalties including fines of up to Rs 1 crore for violations. The NMC confirmed that medical institutions will continue to face regulatory action for deficiencies through designated boards.

Why it matters

Medical colleges and administrative boards will operate under streamlined regulatory oversight without duplicate evaluation procedures, affecting how institutional standards and compliance are enforced.
