No new strain of H1N1, say ICMR sources as swine flu cases rise

No new strain of H1N1 has been identified amidst an ongoing increase in swine flu cases in Delhi and other parts of the country, according to sources at the Indian Council of Medical Research. Officials stated that currently circulating influenza strains are well-matched with vaccine recommendations for the Northern Hemisphere. The circulating Influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 viruses belong to the A/Missouri/11/2025 strain under clade 6B.1A.5a2a, which has been in circulation since 2025. Seasonal influenza remains mostly self-limiting, though young children, the elderly, and individuals with underlying medical conditions face higher risks of complications. The national capital has recorded over 2,300 Influenza-A cases this year, including more than 1,777 H1N1 cases up to August 21.
Why it matters
The rise in H1N1 cases has prompted health authorities in Delhi to issue advisories and led Union Health Minister J P Nadda to review national preparedness.
