Nobel Prize Week Kicks Off in Stockholm with Medicine Award
· World · ABC News, The Independent, India Today
This year's Nobel Prize week begins on Monday in Stockholm with the announcement of the medicine prize at the Karolinska Institute. Last year, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi won the medicine prize for discovering peripheral immune tolerance, a key pathway that prevents the immune system from attacking the body. Experts consider these findings crucial for understanding autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The medicine prize announcement is followed by the physics prize on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded on Friday, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on Oct. 12. This year's prize money is 12 million Swedish kronor, amounting to about $1.2 million for an individual, small group or organization.
Why it matters
