North Korean leader Kim Jong Un commissioned the warship Kang Kon at Wonsan Port in Kangwon Province on Sunday, calling it capable of delivering "annihilating retaliatory strikes" against enemies amid what he described as "constant threats" in waters near the Korean Peninsula. The vessel, named after a North Korean military leader killed during the Korean War, carries the same weapons systems as the 5,000-tonne Choe Hyon destroyer launched in June, which analysts say can carry nuclear-capable missiles, according to KCNA. The Kang Kon had partially capsized during its first commissioning in May 2025 before being repaired, relaunched, and cleared through weapons testing by July this year.
