North Korea Denies FBI Allegation of $6 Billion Binance Hack
· World · The Hindu, PTI, BBC News
North Korea has rejected US allegations that it orchestrated the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance, calling the claims "absurd rhetoric" and a political provocation. The denial came from Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of leader Kim Jong UN, through state news agency KCNA. The FBI attributed the hack to a group supported by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, labelling it potentially the largest financial heist ever. Binance said it covered most of the stolen assets using company funds and has reopened withdrawals. Analysts in Seoul said Pyongyang's swift response likely reflects concern that the accusation could trigger tighter efforts to disrupt revenue streams funding its weapons programmes. North Korea has previously denied all allegations linking it to cryptocurrency theft and cybercrime.
Why it matters
The dispute escalates US-North Korea tensions and could lead to stricter global measures targeting cryptocurrency flows that fund Pyongyang's weapons development.
