North Korea Fires 10 Missiles Amid Nuclear Arsenal Dispute
· World · Indian Express, Reuters, CBS News
North Korea launched about 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea off its eastern waters on Thursday from the capital region, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The launches followed Pyongyang's dismissal of Washington's decision to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea. US President Donald Trump recently stated he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong UN this year and cited an estimated 57 nuclear warheads for North Korea. In contrast, South Korea's upper estimate places the North's nuclear arsenal at up to 120 warheads, more than double the figure cited by Trump. South Korea's presidential National Security Council held an emergency meeting and urged North Korea to halt ballistic-missile launches, which violate UN Security Council resolutions.
Why it matters
The missile launches and conflicting nuclear stockpile estimates heighten security tensions on the Korean Peninsula as the US attempts to revive diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang.
